Before you release that music…

lundi 5 mars 2018, 13:00 , par Home Studio Corner
A couple weeks ago, while I was doing an episode of Ask Joe, I came across this question: I just released some music. How do I get more people interested in it?
Such a good question. We spend so much time writing, recording, and mixing music that we don’t think about what to do once that music is OUT there.
Even if you’re not working on you’re own music, it’s worth thinking about this on behalf of your clients.
Here’s the way it usually goes. Let’s say I’m a fan of an artist, but I haven’t heard anything from her in a while. Suddenly she explodes onto the scene, posting 18 times a day on Facebook about her new record. She does a little email marketing, too. But the problem is she’s been silent for the last two years. Then suddenly she’s blowing up my feed and inbox saying, “LISTEN TO MY MUSIC. LISTEN TO IT NOOOOOOWWW.”
You know what would have worked better? If she had been posting regular content about the creative process WHILE she was making the album over the last year. That way I’m hearing from her regularly, and I’m seeing how she’s working on some new music. I’m more connected to her and much more likely to check out her music when the album is finally released.
Think about it this way. You’re subscribed to this email list because you like what I have to say. What if I only emailed you once per year, and I was asking you to buy something? That wouldn’t work, right?
You subscribed to my email list because you saw me consistently providing value, week in and week out, for years.
Sporadic doesn’t work anymore.
You gotta show up everyday.
Does that sound like work? That’s because it IS.
