FLUX:: Immersive – a Powerful Technology for Paris Conservatory

Paris, France – April 2021
The Conservatoire de Paris, or Paris Conservatory, is one of the oldest institutions in France, founded in 1795. Officially known as Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSDMP), the school offers courses in dance and music, including related production and technical studies.
Three of the Conservatory’s academic departments are now involved in immersive audio, utilizing the power of SPAT Revolution from FLUX:: Immersive. The Conservatory’s audiovisual department produces immersive audio content, utilizing SPAT Revolution to create artificial reverberation and automate the positioning of sources.
The school’s sound department, providing advanced training for audio engineers, also uses SPAT to create immersive content, including audio for live performance. Two of the Conservatory’s 300-seat public performance spaces are equipped with a multi-channel diffusion system addressing the audience, designed for multiple formats of immersive audio production.

The Conservatory’s multiple rooms and control rooms are interconnected to enable multiple configurations, with microphones, cameras, and other audiovisual gear to be shared between spaces. The rooms are shared between the department staff, including multiple audio engineers, the composition and new technologies department, and the audio department, including numerous professors and students involved in spatialized sound studies.
“Our students are learning a number of different production techniques, including live and studio production,” explains Jean-Christophe Messonnier, Sound Engineer at the Audiovisual department.
“Using SPAT Revolution, we are able to configure the systems so they can learn to work in Dolby Atmos, as well as other multiple immersive environments ranging from 5 channels to 16 channels or more. This flexibility is an important asset.”

For live concerts, students generally work with the sound engineers at the audiovisual department to prepare multichannel files that will be presented in two of the public rooms. These projects typically involve in-depth mixing and spatialization using SPAT Revolution.
Often students will begin their projects in the stereophonic field, using SPAT to expand the material via object based mixing. The concerts are recorded and broadcast on the Conservatory’s website in binaural and transaural, in conjunction with a 5.1 channel broadcast at the school’s media library, where two studios are equipped with 5.1 channel monitoring format.
As with most educational institutions, the Conservatory’s control rooms and immersive capabilities are constantly evolving and updating. Current projects include new Dolby Atmos encoding and 5.1 broadcasting from the Conservatory facilities.
As Jean-Christophe Messonnier observes, “our objective is to follow the evolution of the technology, to articulate the tools and develop methods for producing all types of music with these immersive formats. The evolution of these technologies has been very significant in recent years, and will certainly be a part of the environment for future audio engineers and composers.”
And SPAT Revolution continues to be a part of that evolution, bringing immersive audio technologies into the future.
