Intel announces XMM 8160 5G modem, device could be used in 2019, 2020 model iPhones

This could prove nifty.
Intel has launched a new modem intended for mobile devices that will connect to 5G mobile networks, the company claiming to have accelerated the launch of the XMM 8160 modem by half a year compared to its original scheduling.
The XMM 8160 5G modem currently boasts peek speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second, Intel claiming this to be etween three and six times faster than the latest LTE modems used in current-generation mobile devices.
The XMM 8160 5G functions as a multimode modem capable of functioning on 4G, 3G, and 2G networks. The unit will also support the new standard of 5G New Radio (NR) along with standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes. The use of a single-chip multimode baseband modem can enable smartphone, tablet, and notebook producers to reuse space typically taken up by other modem chips for other components, or even to create a smaller overall device.

Intel has stated that the unit will ship in the second half of 2019, the unit being expected to be included in commercial devices come the first half of 2020.
It’s also thought that this time frame would allow the XMM 8160 5G modem to find its way into a forthcoming iPhone, neither Apple or Intel having provided an official comment as to this.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
