Catalina, iOS 13, the New Mac Pro and All the Good Stuff From WWDC

Apple gave us a look at the next versions of its operating system, including macOS Catalina, iOS 13, and tvOS and watchOS. We also learned about the new Mac Pro desktop computer coming in the fall. There was lots to like in the announcements, including dark mode for iOS, iCloud folder sharing, the birth of iPad OS, the ability to use an iPad as a second screen for your Mac, and much more.

Video Transcript: Hi, this is Gary with MacMost.com. Let's take a look at all the good stuff in today's Apple announcements.

Let's start by looking at the new features in iOS 13. Two big ones are Dark Mode and also Swipe Typing, which means you'll be able to swipe around on the keyboard rather than having to tap out each character. There's a lot of third party keyboards that offer this but it will be nice to have it built in. There are also going to be improvements throughout all the apps, particularly Reminders which will be rewritten from the ground up with some new features. The Maps app, which is going to include something that looks at lot like Goggle Streetview.
There will also be changes to the Camera and Photos apps as well. It looks like we'll be getting a lot of the Photos editing features that we see on the Mac in Photos but in the Camera app on iOS. Also now a lot of the editing features will now come to videos as well. So you'll be able to do things like apply filters or crop video as well as photos.
Apple announced they'll be breaking iOS apart into iOS and iPad OS. It's unclear how this is going to effect developers. It probably won't effect consumers very much at all. But iPad is definitely going to move more towards a desktop experience. In fact Safari is going to be more of a desktop browser experience than a mobile one. There will be more multi-tasking features. The Files app is looking more like the Mac Finder than ever before. You'll also be able to use USB thumb drives directly with your iPad.
So with WWDC the big question is what's the next version of MacOS going to be called. The answer, we now know, is Catalina. As predicted in Catalina we will see iTunes broken up into three apps. There will be the Music app, the Podcast app, and the TV app. So it's just those three sections of iTunes broken out into individual apps. So what happens with iOS syncing. Well, surprisingly it's going to move to the Finder which is probably where it belongs.
We're also going to see something called Sidecar which is the ability to use an iPad as a second monitor for a Mac. We're going to see more iOS apps coming to Mac. It's called Project Catalyst and allows developers to import their apps more easily. There's also going to be a Find My App which is probably across all platforms and it will replace things like Find My iPhone, or Find My Mac. Also allow you to find devices that may not be currently connected to the network using something called BlueTooth Becons. There will be new improvements to accessibility particularly for voice control. So we're going to see better dictation functionality and better control functionality of your entire Mac with just your voice.
WWDC usually is just about software because it's for developers. But Apple announced a piece of hardware that's developer related. This beauty here which is the new MacPro. This machine, at its upper end, is going to be so incredibly powerful. It's going feature an Intel Xeon processor with up to 28 cores. You can back it with up to 1.5 terabytes of memory. It's going to have seven additional expansion slots including four doublewide PCI expansion slots. It's going to have special types of expansion slots for video cards to allow you to do all sorts of things and something called an AfterBurner Card that will allow video editors to work directly with source material. We're talking 8K source. Not just one stream but up to three streams of 8K video at once. Prices are going to start at $6000 for this and that's just with 32 gigs of memory, 8 cores, and a 256 gig SSD drive.
Apple also announced a new display. Their first in a long time called the Pro Display XDR. The thing is a 6K 32 inch screen and is going to cost $5000. There's plenty more. A lot of it, of course, being for developers, the new tools that they can use to make some incredible new apps in the coming year.
Apple announced Watch OS 6 which is going to make the watch a little bit more independent from iPhones. It's going to have native apps like AudioBooks, Voice Memos, and Calculator that work on their own as well as its own App Store app. Apple TV is going to get multi user support. It's also going to gain support for wireless controllers for the Xbox and PlayStation. This being ahead of Apple Arcade which will launch later this year.
AirPods are going to get a new feature which will allow you to do audio sharing. So you can be listening to something on your iPhone using your AirPods and then you can send that stream to somebody else with AirPods as well. Siri is going to get a new voice. This will be completely computer generated for the first time. Apple is going to introduce a really cool privacy feature across all the Apple platforms and even the web that's called Sign in with Apple. Basically it's an alternative to Signin with Facebook or Signin with Goggle that you see on so many websites. The difference being that Apple is going to keep your information more private. It's going to get really specific about what information it shares with the sites, apps, and services. It will even allow you to generate one off email address that forwards to your regular email so you don't have to give your actual email address to a service you may not trust completely.
To top it all off it looks like we'll finally get the ability to share a folder in iCloud Drive. Now all this software related stuff we won't see until this Fall when the new iOS 13 and MacOS Catalina comes out. Also in the Fall we'll get to see that new MacPro.
