iOS 17: How to set Siri to listen for ‘Hey Siri’ instead of just ‘Siri’

With iOS 17, Siri by default still responds to “Hey Siri” but users can now also say simply, “Siri.” However, users can adjust this so that Siri responds to only “Hey Siri” or you can even turn off the voice activation. This might be ideal if, say, you know an actual person with the same name and you’re around them frequently enough that saying “Siri” causes confusion.

The devices that allow this include:

iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)

iPhone 11 (all variations)

iPhone 12 (all variations)

iPhone 13 (all variations)

iPhone 14 (all variations)

iPhone 15 (all variations)

IPad minI (5th generation and later)

iPad (8th generation and later)

iPad Air (3rd generation and later)

IPad Pro 11-Inch (all generations)

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

Here’s how to modify the voice activation for Siri. Read our iOS 17 superguide for more information about the latest iPhone operating system.

Tap Listen for at the top of the listing.

Select the option you want:

“Siri” or “Hey Siri”: Siri will activate when you say either of these.

“Hey Siri”: You must say this to activate Siri. It will not work if you simply say “Siri.”
