Why Apple gets a pass for box office flops like ‘Argylle’

mercredi 7 février 2024, 22:46 , par Mac Daily News
From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (director, writer and producer) comes “Argylle,” a reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller. Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of bestselling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aidan, a cat-allergic spy played by Sam Rockwell, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.
The star-studded ensemble cast features Henry Cavill, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Richard E. Grant, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Sofia Boutella, Samuel L. Jackson, and Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer).
But, the film hasn’t fared well with the majority of critics or at the box office. Even so, Apple gets a pass.
The Hollywood Reporter:

Given that Apple has seemingly unlimited resources, many hold it to a different standard as it embraces the traditional theatrical space in a bid to boost Apple TV+ subscribers and be a force in the Oscar race.
(Sources close to the tech giant claim Killers, which nabbed 10 Oscar noms, and Napoleon have driven subs and performed well on premium VOD after grossing $157.6 million and $219.4 million at the global box office, respectively.)
Rival studio execs don’t seem to mind the media discrepancy either, with Apple pumping money into the ecosystem during treacherous times. “And it certainly makes cinema owners happy,” says one such exec.

MacDailyNews Take: Apple wouldn’t keep spending if Apple TV+ wasn’t drawing in subscribers and helping to sell iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, Macs, and Apple Vision Pros.
