41% of Apple users subscribe to Apple Music vs. 30% to Spotify

CIRP this week looks at Apple’s Services sector and how it might play in various governmental antitrust actions. In streaming music among Apple device users, Apple Music leads both Spotify and Pandora. 41% of Apple customers report using Apple Music, compared to 30% for paid Spotify Premium and under 10% for PandoraOne (Pandora’s paid service).
Michael Levin and Josh Lowitz for CIRP: In streaming video, Apple is in a somewhat different position. About one-third of Apple customers report using the Apple TV+, behind Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others. Streaming video penetration, paid streaming services, all Apple customers (twelve months ending December 2023) We will leave it up to the antitrust attorneys to decide what constitutes a monopoly, but we have some insights from the consumer behavior side. Streaming music is a single vendor decision for most consumers. Apple Music, Spotify, and others provide adequately comprehensive service and libraries, so there is no need to subscribe to multiple providers. As with AirPods and Apple Watches, the question then is how Apple maintains Apple Music’s leading market share. Is it the result of a great service designed to work seamlessly with iPhones, iPads, and Macs? Or are there visible or invisible barriers that restrict Spotify and other’s growth? Streaming video is another story. Competitors in that market have virtually no overlap of specific titles, so subscribing to Netflix leaves a viewer without access to Hulu’s library, or Max’s, or Amazon’s. Because of this, streaming video users generally subscribe to multiple services. (Note, the bars on the streaming music chart add up to 79% and the top three bars on the streaming video chart add up to 191%.) Here Apple TV+’s approximately one-third penetration lags a number of competitors, so it is hard to describe it as a monopoly, but we expect that antitrust attorneys will still have theories about pricing and marketing advantages that Apple may enjoy. MacDailyNews Take: Spotify’s lack of high-res and spatial audio make Apple Music the clear choice for those who appreciate quality (as most Apple device users are obviously inclined to do).
