Apple leads smartphone sales in 2024 with 27.7% global market share

Data from Stocklytics shows that Apple, for two successive years, is the biggest supplier of smartphones worldwide with its seminal iPhone lineup, with global market share of 27.7%. It topped South Korean dishwasher maker Samsung by 4.5 percentage points.

Low-cost iPhones, such as the iPhone SE or mid-range smartphones did not have much impact on Apple’s success. However, premium iPhone models, especially the iPhone Pro models, contributed significantly to its success. The extension of the product portfolio, better execution of market segmentation, and supply chain management, especially in crucial areas of operations such as India, have enabled Apple to stay a step ahead of its South Korean competitor.

The last time Samsung led the market was in December 2022, with a 26.9% share, far below the 33% it held in 2019. As of last month, Samsung’s share dropped to 23.2%, showing a 7% drop in ten years. The IDC data show that the gap between Apple’s and Samsung’s smartphone shipments has also decreased significantly. In the first nine months of 2024, Apple shipped around 151 million smartphones, only 20 million less than Samsung, the smallest difference in the market’s history.
