Apple considers monetizing Apple Maps

A few years back, Apple decided to ramp up its advertising efforts. They restructured the advertising division under Eddy Cue’s services umbrella, significantly increasing investment in App Store search ads. The team has since expanded to include advertising in Apple News and Stocks apps, and recently took on the responsibility for ads in Apple’s sports ventures. With this momentum, Apple might soon explore monetizing Apple Maps as well.

A few years ago, Apple employees explored integrating search ads into its Maps apps. It would work similarly to Google Maps, where a business could pay Apple to have their restaurant or venue appear higher in search results.
Now, Apple is giving this notion more thought. In a recent all-hands meeting for the Maps group, Apple said monetizing the app is a lever it is exploring. While there is no timeline or active engineering work being done, the company has again floated the idea of charging for prioritization in search results. It also could make certain locations appear more prominently on the map. This is already a fairly large business for Google, and Apple could conceivably replicate that success to fuel its services business.

MacDailyNews Take: It certainly makes sense to monetize something like Apple Maps that cost so much to create and maintain, as long as it doesn’t negatively impact the users experience.
