![]() David Shepardson and Steve Holland for Reuters: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co announced the plan in a meeting at the White House with President Donald Trump. “We must be able to build the chips and semiconductors that we need right here,” Trump said. “It’s a matter of national security for us.” The $100 billion outlay, which would boost domestic production and make the United States less reliant on semiconductors made in Asia, is in addition to a major prior investment announcement. TSMC agreed in April to expand its planned U.S. investment by $25 billion to $65 billion and to add a third Arizona factory by 2030. The TSMC announcement is the latest in a string of such developments. In February, Apple said it would invest $500 billion in the next four years. Emirati billionaire Hussain Sajwani and SoftBank also have promised multi-billion dollar investments in the U.S. MacDailyNews Note: In January, TSMC began producing 4-nanometer (4nm) chips for U.S. customers in Arizona. Apple’s current state-of-the-art A18 series (launched September 9, 2024) and M4 series (launched May 15, 2024) chips are produced using TSMC’s 3nm N3E process. Apple’s previous generation silicon, the A17 Pro (launched September 12, 2023) and M3 series (launched October 30, 2023), are produced using TSMC’s 3nm N3B process.
