Emotional intelligence requires self-management, controlling impulsive behaviors and feelings and managing emotions in healthy ways. High EQ individuals show initiative, adapting to changing circumstances and following through with commitments. They also benefit from social awareness, understanding the emotions, concerns, and needs of others, picking up on emotional cues and recognizing power dynamics in organizations and groups.

People with high emotional intelligence are self-aware, recognizing their own emotions and how they impact their behavior and thoughts and acknowledging their own weaknesses and strengths. High EQ individuals are adept at managing relationships, understanding how to build and maintain rapport, communicate clearly, and work well in a team, adeptly managing conflict and inspiring and influencing others.

Emotional intelligence is integral to effective business leadership, creating leaders who are self-aware, accountable, value and foster trusting relationships, and regulate emotions in positive ways. Psychologist Daniel Golemen stressed the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership in an article published by Harvard Business Review, pointing out that the most effective leaders have a high degree of EQ, without which a person can have the best training in the world but will still not make a great leader.

By modelling emotional control, leadership encourages team members to manage their own emotions constructively too, instilling an atmosphere where conflicts can be resolved swiftly and rationally rather than emotions taking control. Rather than reacting impulsively, high EQ leaders pause and assess situations objectively, addressing their team with a thoughtful, composed response, reassuring colleagues by providing a clear path forward. By practicing self-regulation, leaders create stable work environments, enabling teams to better focus on the task in hand.

Great leaders manage and control their own emotions, practicing self-regulation to keep a level head even in the most challenging situations. Rather than falling foul of knee-jerk reactions, high EQ leaders respond thoughtfully to situations, culminating in a stable and secure work environment where team members feel safe, even during moments of uncertainty.
