EU decision on Apple due in coming weeks, antitrust chief says
On Tuesday, EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera informed European Parliament lawmakers that a decision on whether Apple and Meta have violated significant tech regulations designed to limit their dominance will be announced in the coming weeks. Since March of last year, the European Commission has been probing Apple and Meta Platforms for possible infringements of the Digital Markets Act, which outlines specific obligations and prohibitions for tech giants to foster competition and enhance consumer options.
Reuters:

Both companies are expected to face modest fines for DMA violations, sources told Reuters last month.
Ribera, who had previously told Reuters that she would issue her decision on Apple and Meta in March, said it would now take a bit longer. “Decisions could be adopted in the coming weeks,” she told lawmakers when asked about the timing.

MacDailyNews Take: Those fines had better be modest or the EU cartel will quickly find out who’s really the boss. Playtime is over.
The U.S. has leverage and recourse. We expect both to be used.
Trump administration has been warning the EU against excessive regulation of American technology firms. On February 21st, President Trump issued a directive, “Defending American Companies and Innovators From Overseas Extortion and Unfair Fines and Penalties,” threatening to impose tariffs on Europe to combat what he called “overseas extortion” of American tech companies through digital services taxes, fines, practices, and policies. – MacDailyNews, March 19, 2025

The European Union arose because the Europeans couldn’t compete on their own with the rest of the world, so they each lined up to surrender their national sovereignty, unique cultures, and dignity for an undemocratic, opaque, wasteful, bloated, bureaucratic quasi-governmental blob – and, even with the EU’s thumbs all over the scale, they still can’t compete. — MacDailyNews, March 4, 2024
