Apple TV+ is winning the quality race

Apple TV+’s unofficial motto is quality over quantity, even as the quantity builds impressively, and leads this year as the only network to land multiple Emmy Award title nominations across Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series categories, as The Studio, Severance, Slow Horses, and Shrinking land top program nominations, alongside Apple’s first-ever Outstanding Television Movie nod for The Gorge.

A plain-text reading of this year’s most-nominated networks and platforms does not tell you the whole story of today’s Emmys announcement… [T]he real story lies in the 79 nominations for Apple TV+, which, in only its sixth Emmy season, has landed the most overall series nominations — 27 total for the second season of Severance — as well as the most nominations for a comedy with The Studio’s 23.
Apple has enjoyed Emmy successes before, not least of which were back-to-back Outstanding Comedy Series wins for Ted Lasso in 2021 and 2022. Last year, in a strike-depleted Emmys field, The Morning Show racked up 16 nominations with its 11 major-category nods leading all other TV shows…
Severance was every bit the compelling psychological mystery it was in its first year, and the Emmys just gave Apple brass 27 reasons to affirm it as their flagship series. Meanwhile, The Studio, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s series about the lunatic goings-on at a fictional movie studio, set the record for most nominations for a debut comedy series ever, a record previously held by Apple’s own Ted Lasso…
Apple is the only network or platform with multiple [Emmy Award] nominees in both Comedy Series (The Studio and Shrinking) and Drama Series (Severance and Slow Horses)…
[T]he real boost could come if Apple can pull off twin Drama and Comedy Series wins, something no network or platform has done since 2017 (the second of back-to-back years when HBO triumphed with Veep and Game of Thrones) and no non-HBO network or platform has accomplished since NBC won with Friends and The West Wing in 2002…
Ted Lasso helped put Apple on the map. A Severance-Studio sweep on September 14 could put Apple on top of the mountain.
