![]() Apple on Tuesday introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, the true flagships in the company’s 2025 iPhone lineup. While the new iPhone Air might grab attention for its ultra-thin design, the Pro models are where Apple puts its best ideas into practice. With a new cooling system, brighter display, upgraded cameras, and longer-lasting batteries, these are the iPhones that Apple wants power users, creators, and gamers to reach for. Here are 11 iPhone 17 Pro features that set them apart. Vapor chamber cooling For the first time, the iPhone has a vapor chamber cooling system that spreads heat more evenly inside the chassis. The company says this allows the iPhone 17 Pro to sustain high levels of performance for longer periods of time, especially when playing demanding games or shooting ProRes video. Combined with the shift to an aluminum unibody that’s lighter and more thermally efficient than last year’s titanium, this is the coolest iPhone yet–literally. The A19 Pro chip Inside the new Pro models is the A19 Pro, Apple’s most advanced chip to date. Built on the latest 3nm process, it promises up to 40 percent better sustained performance compared to the previous chip. That means higher frame rates in 3D games and faster export times in video editing apps. The A19 Pro is a 3nm chip.Apple The chip also integrates Apple’s second-generation Neural Engine, accelerating features like on-device intelligence, image processing, and Live Captions. Not that the A18 chip in the iPhone 16 is slow, but having an even faster chip ensures that your new iPhone will last much longer. Stronger Ceramic Shield 2 Durability gets a double boost this year. For the first time, the Ceramic Shield material that has long protected the display now also covers the back glass. On the front, Apple introduces Ceramic Shield 2, which it claims offers even greater scratch and drop resistance. Combined, these changes make the iPhone 17 Pro the toughest iPhone yet. Brighter, anti-reflective display The iPhone 17 Pro’s Super Retina XDR display pushes brightness to an impressive 3,000 nits, the highest brightness level ever in a smartphone. That ensures visibility even in direct sunlight and enhances HDR content. The always-on ProMotion panel still refreshes up to 120Hz, but now benefits from a new anti-reflective coating, reducing glare during outdoor use. For professionals who rely on color accuracy and visibility, this is a meaningful upgrade. Apple covers the display with the new Ceramic Shield 2 coating. Apple Larger batteries, longer life Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro lineup features its largest batteries ever, with the Pro Max capable of up to 37 hours of video playback. That’s several hours longer than last year’s model. Efficiency improvements from the A19 Pro and better thermal design also help stretch battery life further in everyday use. For heavy travelers or mobile gamers, this is the kind of improvement you’ll notice on day one. A new Center Stage front camera The front-facing camera has been upgraded to an 18-megapixel sensor that supports Center Stage, which keeps you perfectly framed during video calls even as you move. That’s a welcome change for those who spend a lot of time in FaceTime or Zoom meetings, and the bump in resolution makes for sharper selfies, too. And thanks to a new square-shaped sensor, the iPhone 17 Pro is capable of taking selfies in any orientation without requiring the user to rotate the phone. 48MP cameras across the board For the first time, all three rear camera lenses feature 48-megapixel sensors. This consistency means users will no longer sacrifice resolution when switching between lenses. It also enables sharper crops, more detailed night shots, and professional-quality ProRAW photos regardless of which camera you’re using. 4x telephoto with 8x fusion zoom Because of the new 48 megapixels telephoto lens, the iPhone 17 Pro delivers up to 8x fusion zoom, blending optical and digital data to create highly detailed long-range images. Users can choose between taking a photo with 4x optical zoom or cropping it to 12 megapixels to achieve an 8x zoom photo. It’s the greatest zoom range ever on an iPhone. All three cameras use 48MP sensors.Apple ProRes RAW for video Apple continues to court professionals with ProRes RAW support, enabling high-end video workflows directly on the iPhone. Whether paired with Final Cut Pro on iPad or exported to a Mac, these files offer maximum flexibility for color grading and editing. For mobile filmmakers, this could make the iPhone 17 Pro an even more compelling tool. Fresh design and colors The iPhone 17 Pro introduces bold new finishes in cosmic orange, deep blue, and silver. The switch back to aluminum gives the phones a slightly different feel. It’s not a radical redesign, but it feels like Apple is giving its Pro lineup a fresh identity this year. More storage, same price Even with all the upgrades, Apple is holding the line on price. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099/£1,099, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199/£1,199. Both models come with 256GB of base storage, and there’s a new 2TB option in the U.S. and Canada. in addition to 512GB and 1TB. Pre-orders open on Friday, September 12, with general availability on September 19. Should you upgrade? The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are more than just iterative updates. With their advanced cooling, upgraded camera system, brighter displays, and longer battery life, they are everything a Pro user expects from a phone. If you’re an iPhone 16 Pro user, the improvements may not be enough to justify the jump. But for those still on an iPhone 14 Pro or earlier, the iPhone 17 Pro feels like a substantial leap forward. Gamers, creators, and anyone who demands the best will find Apple’s 2025 flagships hard to resist. We have the complete lowdown on the iPhone Air, iPhone 17, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro 3.
