![]() Felice Maranz for Bloomberg News: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent heads to Malaysia this week for a new round of US-China trade talks, signaling an effort by Washington to calm fears of a full-blown trade war. Separately, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said he thinks the US government shutdown is likely to end some time this week. The S&P 500 advanced 0.8%, with all sectors in the green, while the Nasdaq 100 rose 1.1% Monday. The start of earnings season has been a good one, according to Bank of America strategist Savita Subramanian. “It’s still early, but headline stats are coming in strong,” with 76% of companies beating earnings-per-share estimates, ahead of the first-week average of 68% and last quarter’s 73%, she wrote in a note. Subramanian flagged big banks, which “posted beats across the board, and reiterated bullish themes” from the prior quarter, including consumer resilience, a strong deal pipeline, and regulatory tailwinds.
