German Antitrust watchdog puts Apple’s redesigned iPhone app tracking pop-ups to the ultimate test
With App Tracking Transparency, apps are required to get a user’s permission to track or access their device’s advertising identifier.
Germany’s Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) announced on Tuesday that it has launched a market test of Apple’s proposed revisions to its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) consent prompt, and is now inviting comments from publishers, media companies, and other regulators to determine whether the changes adequately resolve earlier competition concerns.
Apple stated that it has agreed to modify the wording and presentation of the ATT prompt as requested by the authority, while preserving the fundamental privacy protections for users.
Kirsti Knolle for Reuters:

Apple had agreed to introduce neutral consent prompts for both its own services and third-party apps, and to largely align the wording, content and visual design of these messages, said Andreas Mundt, head of Germany’s Bundeskartellamt.
The company also proposed simplifying the consent process so developers can obtain user permission for advertising-related data processing in a way that complies with data protection law.
The regulator is involving the federal commissioner for data protection and Bavaria’s data protection authority in the test…
A final decision will follow the market test.

MacDailyNews Take: The German antitrust authority has accused Apple of abusing its market dominance via its app tracking tool, favoring its own interests.
Apple is not favoring its own interests here.
Apple does not track users across third-party apps and websites, selling user tracking data to other companies, which is why Apple apps do not display the App Tracking Transparency prompt to obtain the users’ permission to allow the collection of end user data and the sharing of it with other companies for purposes of tracking across apps and web sites.
Apple employs on-device intelligence and other features to minimize the data that the company collects in Apple’s apps, browsers, and online services, and the company does not create a single comprehensive user data profile across all of our apps and services.
