TypeScript rises to the top on GitHub

mardi 28 octobre 2025, 23:12 , par InfoWorld
TypeScript, Microsoft’s strongly typed JavaScript variant, has become the most-used language on GitHub, according to GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 report released on October 28.

August 2025 marked the first time TypeScript emerged as the most-used language on GitHub, overtaking both JavaScript and Python, said the report. The rise of TypeScript illustrates the shift toward using typed languages, which can make agent-assisted coding more reliable in production, according to GitHub. Furthermore, most major front-end frameworks are now scaffolding with TypeScript by default, said the report. And, while Python remains dominant for AI and data science workloads, the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem accounts for more overall development activity.

TypeScript’s rise was one of three key shifts cited in the report, and all three were related to AI. The report also noted the use of generative AI tools is now was standard in development, with more than 1.1 million public repositories now using an LLM SDK, and 693,867 of these projects built in the past 12 months. Developers merged a record 518.7M pull requests in the 2025 timeframe (a 29% increase year over year) and AI adoption accelerated, with 80% of new developers on GitHub using Copilot within their first week.

The third shift is in the way that AI is reshaping developer choice, not just code. In the past, developer choice referred to choosing an IDE, language, or framework. In the present timeframe, that has changed. GitHub now sees a correlation between the rapid adoption of AI tools and evolving language preferences. This and other shifts suggest AI now influences not only how fast code is written, but which languages and tools developers use. As the report states, “Agents are here. Early signals in our data are starting to show their impact, but ultimately point to one key thing: we’re just getting started and we expect far greater activity in the months and years ahead,” the company said.

The GitHub report cited more than 4.3 million AI-related repositories, noting record-level activity across repositories. Developers created more than 230 new repositories every minute, merged 43.2 million pull requests on average each month (+23% year over year), and pushed nearly 1 billion commits in 2025 (+25.1% year over year)—including a record of nearly 100 million commits in August alone.

GitHub’s reference to 2025 covers the time period of September 1, 2024, through August 31, 2025. In other findings:

GitHub hosted 630 million total projects.

More than 180 million developers were using GitHub.

Pull requests totaled 43.2 million projects.

The number of contributions to public projects reached 1.12 billion.

Also notable is that, in 2025, GitHub saw 30% faster fixes of critical severity vulnerabilities, with 26% fewer repositories receiving critical alerts.
