Google DeepMind and UK Team Up for £5B AI Deal
vendredi 12 décembre 2025, 09:54 , par eWeek
Google has revealed plans for its first-ever automated research lab, backed by a £5 billion investment that could boost the UK’s economic trajectory.
As nations worldwide pour unprecedented resources into AI infrastructure, the UK has secured a decent technology partnership. Automated AI research lab According to the announcement, Google will open its first automated research laboratory in 2026, creating a facility that uses AI and robotics to conduct hundreds of experiments per day. Built from the ground up to integrate with Google’s Gemini AI models, this lab will focus on developing superconductor materials that can carry electricity with zero resistance. These materials that could revolutionize everything from medical imaging to computer chips, discovered by AI systems working around the clock. Fusion energy could be next While the automated lab is certainly interesting, the announcement includes something even more ambitious. Google DeepMind will collaborate with the UK government and scientific community on AI-enabled fusion energy research—essentially using AI to help crack the code on mimicking the Sun’s power generation. This development arrives at a good moment for the UK’s post-pandemic recovery strategy. Google unveiled plans to invest £5 billion in UK AI infrastructure and research, including a new data center in Waltham Cross. Meanwhile, more than 5,000 jobs are heading to Wales over the next decade as part of the AI Growth Zone expansion. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall says, “Science and technology are at the heart of our mission to drive a new era of national renewal – and partnerships like this will help us go further, faster.” A nation can dream This partnership could transform daily life across the UK within the next few years. British scientists will gain priority access to Google DeepMind’s advanced AI models, including AlphaGenome for DNA sequencing and the AlphaFold tool. The new superconductors could slash medical imaging costs while making computer chips more efficient. Transportation could be improved, and the path to net zero could accelerate beyond current projections. Even more immediately, the partnership includes plans for “Gemini for Government”—an AI system designed to cut bureaucracy and improve public services. With the lab opening in just over a year and the broader partnership expanding collaboration with the UK’s AI Security Institute, the implications are only beginning to unfold. This partnership represents more than just investment—it’s arguably a declaration that the UK intends to be in the vanguard for the next era of technological advancement. Apple is removing a few bricks from its walled garden as it is reportedly close to a $1 billion deal to use Google’s Gemini AI model to power a revamped version of its AI assistant Siri.
