Amazon’s Zoox Recalls 332 US Vehicles Due to Software Glitch

Amazon’s autonomous vehicle division has hit a roadblock that might send shockwaves through the self-driving car industry.
The company’s Zoox unit has announced a recall affecting 332 robotaxis, marking the third major software recall in just eight months. The latest incident involves vehicles recklessly crossing into oncoming traffic lanes near intersections, creating situations that federal regulators warn could lead to catastrophic crashes.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Zoox said it has recalled the vehicles equipped with its automated driving system (ADS) software.
This alarming pattern of recurring safety issues raises serious questions about the autonomous vehicle industry’s rush to deploy self-driving cars on public roads, especially as competitors like Waymo continue expanding their commercial operations across multiple cities. Since March, Zoox has now issued three separate recalls affecting nearly 900 vehicles total — a troubling track record that’s casting doubt on the company’s readiness for commercial deployment.
Pattern of peril
The most recent recall stems from a discovery made in late August. Between August and December, the company documented 62 separate instances of these unsafe lane crossings — nearly one incident every other day.
What makes this particularly concerning is the company’s admission that these maneuvers, while common for human drivers, didn’t meet their safety standards. This suggests the autonomous systems were programmed to mimic potentially risky human driving behaviors rather than prioritizing safety-first approaches that should define autonomous vehicles. The recall affects all vehicles that operated on public roads between March and Dec. 18.
Note to self
Seven months ago, Zoox recalled 270 vehicles following a Las Vegas collision, and nine months ago recalled 258 vehicles due to unexpected braking issues that led to motorcyclist injuries.
While Zoox has provided free software updates to address each issue, the recurring nature of these safety problems suggests deeper systemic issues with their autonomous driving algorithms that simple patches can’t resolve.
Meanwhile, competitor Waymo has demonstrated significantly more stability, serving 14 million trips in 2025 and expanding to 26 markets just last week. Even Waymo faced a recent recall for illegally passing school buses in Texas, showing that safety challenges plague the entire industry as companies race toward commercial deployment.
The future of autonomous vehicles
These repeated safety failures come at a critical time for the autonomous vehicle industry, as public skepticism remains high, with 66% of drivers feeling fearful about self-driving cars earlier this year.
Zoox currently operates only demonstration rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, requiring additional federal approval before launching paid commercial service. The company plans to begin charging for rides in 2026, but these ongoing safety issues could delay regulatory approvals and further erode public confidence in autonomous driving technology.
The industry’s safety challenges extend beyond Zoox, with Tesla facing intense scrutiny over dozens of fatal collisions involving its Autopilot system.
The question now becomes whether regulators will tighten oversight, or if companies like Zoox will be forced to slow their ambitious deployment timelines to address these fundamental safety concerns.
