AI Named TIME Person of Year 2025 in Historic First
jeudi 11 décembre 2025, 16:10 , par eWeek
Humans! Your ‘TIME’ is over.
In an announcement today (Dec. 11) that reflects the seismic shift reshaping the world, TIME magazine declared the “Architects of AI” as its 2025 Person of the Year. This marks the first time AI has received this prestigious recognition, acknowledging how the technology became virtually inescapable across every aspect of American life this year. The magazine’s editors specifically honored the individuals building, designing, and shaping AI rather than the technology itself, recognizing both prominent evangelists and behind-the-scenes creators. TIME to look back What happened over the past few months reveals just how dramatically AI transformed from experimental technology to global necessity. AI emerged as arguably the most consequential tool in great-power competition since nuclear weapons. Investment in computer-processing equipment is now growing at nearly four times the rate of GDP, while computer scientist Stuart Russell estimates current planned expenditure could be 25 times the Manhattan Project’s budget, even adjusting for inflation. The autonomous AI market alone is projected to reach $162.5 billion this year, with 97 million people expected to work in AI-related roles. The grateful eight The magazine’s historic decision breaks from tradition by featuring two distinctive covers showcasing the human architects of this transformation. Digital painter Jason Seiler created a homage to the famous 1932 “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photograph, depicting tech leaders including Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, and others. A second cover by illustrator Peter Crowther shows the letters “AI” under construction, featuring the same influential figures. What’s remarkable about this choice is how it connects to TIME’s historical precedent of recognizing technology’s seismic impact. The magazine named “The Computer” as Machine of the Year in 1982 and “You” as Person of the Year in 2006 during the World Wide Web’s acceleration. But never before has the magazine depicted the actual power brokers of a technological revolution with such visual drama. Our world, our future The magazine’s choice reflects its core mission of identifying figures who wielded the most influence over the year’s events, regardless of whether that influence was positive. This year’s recognition follows Donald Trump’s 2024 selection and Taylor Swift’s historic 2023 recognition as the first Person of the Year honored for artistic achievement. Something even more profound emerges from this decision: AI forces society to confront fundamental questions about human dignity and moral responsibility in an age of thinking machines. With 80% of companies now investing in AI technologies, this recognition signals that the AI revolution has moved from possibility to reality, fundamentally reshaping how humanity works, thinks, and lives. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has officially become the most downloaded app of 2025 on Apple’s App Store in the US. The post AI Named TIME Person of Year 2025 in Historic First appeared first on eWEEK.
