Keyboardist and composer Jamie Muhoberac has worked with luminaries like Don Was, Bob Dylan, Seal and the Rolling Stones, and this summer he hits the road with John Mayer. Get to know our TALENT SCOUT Artist of the Week!NAME: Jamie Muhoberac HOMETOWN: Los Angeles, CAMUSICAL TRAINING: Two months of harmony classes at the Dick Grove School of Music in 1984. FIRST GIGS: Technically, I’d say it was singing with my brother and two sisters on a 7-Eleven radio spot at United Western studios in 1970. I was five years old. As a keyboard player, I played in up to six bands at the same time in clubs in Los Angeles from 1983 to 1988. I took everything that came my way until I was able to make a living as a musician.MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Brian Eno, Stevie Wonder, Mort Garson, Kraftwerk, Bernie Worrell, 70’s era Tangerine Dream, Throbbing Gristle, Killing JokeWHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: Jana Winderen - Out Of Range, Arthur Lyman- Hawaiian Sunset-Parts 1 & 2, Sun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises, Conrad Schnitzler-Ballet Statique, Narin Yalnizlik - She Past Away.MY BIG BREAK: Going out on tour with Was (Not Was) in 1988. Don Was became a big producer around that time, so I ended up working on a lot of records for him, including Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. Also, meeting Trevor Horn and doing Seal’s first album with him was a major thing. 30 years later, looking at over 900 album credits on allmusic, along with live work, it’s hard to make sense of it all. It’s as if someone else did it!LATEST ALBUM: The last thing I did before going out on tour was an EP for Michael David from the group Classixx. I’ve played on their albums, and I really like MIchael’s solo music a lot.FAVORITE KEYBOARDS AND WHY? I’ve been using the Modal 002 on a lot of things lately. I like the mix of wavetable synthesis with a the ability to make things huge in an analog way. I also like my Minimoog a lot because it’s been in my family since I was six years old. (My father was a session keyboard player). I started playing it over 45 years ago and still use it on albums to this day. Also, I’m always generating a lot of sound with my Eurorack system. I rarely use it as a keyboard instrument, though.WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I’m scoring a film this month, and going back out on tour with John Mayer from mid-summer through much of 2019. ADVICE TO THE NEXT GENERATION: You need to have your own way of programming and your own way of playing. Concentrate on both equally. I always think of things visually and emotionally when I’m working on something. The music takes care of itself. In fact, it’s often secondary.
