Expressive E announces v2.0 firmware update to OSMOSE keyboard instrument

MUSEWIRE – Music News/ — Today, the folks at Expressive E announced formal release of their v2.0 firmware update for the ground breaking MPE music synthesizer keyboard, the OSMOSE. As an early backer, I have been awaiting this to “firm up” (pun intended) some of the features based on evolution and also user feedback over the past year. OSMOSE ia the next-gen standalone expressive synthesizer that allows a performer-player to add emotion and movement to music with a simple touch.

WHAT IS OSMOSE?
According to the company: “Osmose is the new standard for musical expressivity. Use intuitive gestures to control this standalone synthesizer and upgrade your playing and production skills.” Press, bend, shake, strum & more to interact with keyboards & electronic sounds in a new organic way. Whether you’re a veteran keyboardist, a workflow-oriented producer, a daring sound designer, or anything in between, Osmose will take your musical journey to uncharted places.
Made for expressivity by Haken Audio, the EaganMatrix sound engine is at home with FM, virtual analog, and physical modeling synthesis, as well as everything in-between.

HAKEN EDITOR UPDATES:
In firmware 2.0, sound presets are no longer stored on the EaganMatrix DSP board but on Osmose’s mainboard. Therefore, a new version of the Haken Editor that supports Osmose firmware 2.0 is required. Until further notice, this Haken Editor version is distributed as part of the ZIP file that contains the Osmose firmware.
It includes the following changes:
– The user preset slots and the system library navigation have been removed
from the Editor. Sound preset switching and preset saving now have to happen
exclusively on Osmose.
– The EaganMatrix permanently and exclusively accesses User Preset Slot 1 on its DSP board. Osmose continuously synchronizes the state of the currently loaded preset with this Slot.
– An “initialize preset” function has been added. Click on “Preset” in the Haken Editor GUI to access it.
After installing firmware 2.0 or higher on your Osmose, please delete older versions of the Haken Editor from your system to avoid compatibility problems.

External MIDI Mode
● The MPE Arpeggiator and Pressure Glide are now available in External MIDI
Mode as well. Both work with every software and hardware compatible with
MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE).
● Osmose now lets you save custom MIDI configuration presets.
Sound Engine Mode
We reforged Osmose’s internal preset system, which now supports:
● Having up to 2048 presets onboard, each with custom sensitivity and playing feature settings (arp and press glide) if needed.
● Adding any preset to your favorite list with the new favorite feature.
● A new playlist system to quickly organize groups of presets.
● A new navigation workflow in the presets menu to take advantage of all
previously mentioned features.
● Improved Program Change and MIDI Bank Select (CC0) implementation,
compatible with the previously mentioned features.
● A new sound bank management system that will allow uploading new preset
banks from the OsmoseUpdater software in the future.
● Automatically loading the last sound preset used before Osmose was shut
down the last time.

For a safer operation with the new preset system, a slightly modified Haken Editor is provided as part of this update.
