Do you want to help me determine my first analog component?

lundi 28 octobre 2024, 17:24 , par Gearslutz
Hey you good Gearspacers!

I strive to get my first hardware component soon and can't judge which one would be right for me. Maybe one of you knows one or at best several of my chosen devices or has a few clever ideas for me. For the devices that I've already zeroed in on, the order would be relevant - but of course I'm also open to alternative suggestions.

Basics:

- I only do boom bap hip hop and my end results should sound like the golden Era. I work a lot on drum machines.

- I build the beats, record and do the mixing myself. And I want to try my hand at mastering - I'll give something to master to a dedicated service just to have a comparison, but I'd also like to try myself and see what I can do.

- Accordingly, I'm looking for components for compressing the drums, for the mix bus of the beats, for the rap recording and for the overall mix glue.

- I want to do all of this with as few devices as possible because a) I am very prone to GAS and want to spend my time making music rather than staring drooling at equipment and b) my financial resources are limited and I should be very careful about where I invest. I also like the aesthetics of a few treasures compared to cabinets full of rarely used options. I would like to end up with a maximum of 2-4 devices. But there will be a long time gap between purchases, so the order counts.

What I imagine I need (I would like to combine as many of them as possible):

- A coloring, glueing compressor for the drums or the beat mix bus

- A fast compressor for drums and vocals

- An opto or vari-mu for the vocals

- Glue and sparkle for the overall mix

- Brickwall limiter

- A Pultecstlye EQ

The devices that I am stuck on and cannot decide between:

- Tegeler Magnetismus 2

The sound on drums blew me away and it has a transient shaper. I wonder if it would be good for deburring vocals, for a possible subsequent opto. Probably not applicable beyond the beat mix bus?

- SSL BUS+

The device is supposed to be incredibly versatile. But I have not yet heard that it transforms a beat in the way that magnetism can.

- Gainlab Emperor

The financial threshold of pain has already been exceeded. But the device is so highly raved about and is said to be so versatile that my mouth is watering. It is supposed to color, is supposedly also suitable for mixing and mastering and I wouldn't need another compressor for the vocals. But does it really replace the punch of magnetism?

- And as for the Pultec - I'm also torn between Tegeler and Gainlab. And if the Tegeler sounds just as good or even better than the Gainlab, then I would probably choose it despite the lack of a mid-band EQ because it also costs €600 less. Does anyone know the comparison?

- And can i get away without a Masteringcomp like the Tegeler Vari-Mu, the Gainlab Dictator or purse cutting monsters like the WES Audio ng?

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read this and, if so, to respond.

I wish you all good music.
