EQ Pedals, and EQ in general

lundi 4 novembre 2024, 00:39 , par Gearslutz
EQ pedals: A humble, underrated and possibly crucial part of anyone's board. One use is for pre-shaping before overdrive and distortion (often a low cut and a mid boost)., Another is to get a sound that fits better in the mix since often that differs a lot from something that sounds good on its own.

What are you using? Sharing go-to settings for different things that would be awesome too.

Onboard tone controls and the amps tone stack make a massive difference too and can be used for some of the same things. When amps include a powerful parametric EQ that can go all kinds of places. Yamaha G-100 is the only amp I've used with that option, but the EQ was amazing. I wonder how it would be in a proper tube amp.

My method is EQ as early in the chain as possible. I have some custom inductor controls in my guitars plus the standard tone controls, a graphic EQ after my tuner, and all tone controls on amps and pedals are generally set flat from there on. For example I'll use the graphic EQ to cut some of the bass boost from a Nobels overdrive pedal, and to bring up some of the mids. I'll run it in front of my overdrive and distortion pedals so the low cut can tighten lows when needed. If too much is lost I'll bring it back with a tone control later in the chain. That's pre- and post- shaping tbc.

I need a better graphic EQ, I cheaped out and I guess you can't - if there is something that beats out the standard Boss I'll check it out, but guessing I'll get one of those.
