Windows 7 upgrade to windows 10/11???

vendredi 8 novembre 2024, 01:55 , par Gearslutz
Hi folks

In 2021 I did a long overdue rebuild of my production machine, which was based around an intel i7 2600s CPU.

The new machine is built upon a AMD Ryzen 9 3900xt CPU, 32gb DDR4 ram, on an ASUS Prime B350 plus motherboard, with an M2ssd system drive.

At the time (without me knowing) windows 7 wasn’t compatible with this motherboard, specifically the M2 driver needed to instal as a system drive. After about a week of headbutting, I managed to find a tool that would let me hack M2 drivers into windows 7, & boot an Install, & from there use compatible drivers from another motherboard to get it all up & running.

The system works fine (though windows restore is broken), & I’ve been using it for 3 years now. The thing I’ve bumped against though is there is now a lot of software that has dropped windows 7 support, typically blocking install & requesting driver components not available within windows 7 (I’ve tried thoroughly to hack these as well, but there’s no workaround).

So my question is, is it worth updating to windows 10/11, over my currently (mostly) working system? Will the newer OS give a performance boost, considering they’re designed with this hardware generation catered for natively?

Or is the upgrade not worth it to chase newer software?

Anyone have similar experience with this scenario?
