Upgrading audio interface: UA to MH or RME?

vendredi 8 novembre 2024, 21:25 , par Gearslutz
I run a production studio, with relatively basic needs: I use it mainly by myself with a few artists coming here occasionally to track vocals.

I used UA interfaces for the past 12 years and I am a very happy customer on everything, except for digital I/O. I ran out digital I/Os already a few years ago and I am currently using an aggregate device with the Apollos and an RME Digiface just to be able to use a few boxes (M7, PCM96, Axe Fx III, Eclipse) that are critical to my workflow - as all existing I/Os are occupied by other things (Burl B2/etc). It works ok, with occasional glitches.

Now - I decided to buy an H9000. I need 4 more stereo digital I/Os and I have a few routes:

1- Sell the Digiface Adat, buy a Digiface Dante, the H9000 with Dante card, and some Dante-to-AES box for the M7/PCM92/etc. and keep running the aggregate device

2- Go MH. With 3xLIO I’ll have the analogue I/O I need, plus 12 stereo AES I/O (more than I need). Quality of converters should be on par even if the product is much older than the x16. I would sell the Apollos and keep the satellite octo I already have for the few non-UADx plugins I use.

3- Go full Dante with RME. 2x1620D would provide more analogue I/Os I currently use, H9000 with Dante card and some AES-to-Dante box yet to identify for everything else. And of course the octo for UAD plugins.

My current reading is that #1 is the easiest and cheaper but less stable/harder to maintain, #3 the most future proof and expensive, #2 a great middle ground.

Thoughts?
