A Bit About Bass: What to Know to Level Up Your Listening

Though headphones come in many styles with many technologies designed to enhance your listening experience, getting the most out of your music goes beyond the headphones you buy, and it’s something you can control! We won’t go (too) crazy on the technical details, but understanding some bass-ics of sound is a surefire way to upgrade and customize your playback for bass and beyond!

It’s About Range: Low-end Instruments & Human Hearing

Each of us hears things differently, but humans hear sound in a specific frequency range, which is typically from 20 hertz (Hz) to 20,000 hertz, which is usually abbreviated as 20Hz to 20kHz. Sounds above or below this range will not be heard by most humans.

So, why does this matter?

Where Does the Bass Live? How Do I Change My Sound?

How we talk about bass sounds in music depends on the frequency of those sounds. Synthesizers, bass guitars, kick drums, and trunk-rattling subwoofers can be casually referred to as “bass” sounds, but they exist on different parts of the frequency spectrum.

Sub-bass (50Hz and below): For the lowest of the low end, this is where those sounds live. Anything below 30Hz is felt more than heard.

Bass (50Hz–250Hz): This frequency range is where you’ll find the deeper registers of bass guitars and synths, delivering impact with plenty of oomph.

Lower midrange (250Hz–1,250Hz): If you imagine the lowest voicings of a flute, viola, or oboe or the higher end of a bass guitar, then here is where those instruments sound.

Upper midrange (1,250Hz–4,000Hz): Lead parts from guitars, synths, and more thrive here in addition to the punch of most percussion parts (minus kick drums).

High (4,000Hz and above): This is a combination of harmonics and high-pitched sounds. Tweaking this range can make things sound brighter or provide more presence but can become strident and fatiguing if boosted too much.

Vocals (in case you were wondering): The human voice covers a wide range of frequencies, starting with spoken fundamentals in the 90Hz to 300Hz range, though trained singers can sing notes below 20Hz, and some females can sing as high as 2,000Hz with whistle tones. But consonants and sibilance can exist as high as 12,000kHz.

Many headphones today include a free-to-download app that, once paired to your smartphone, gives you access to sound controls, usually in the form of an equalizer (EQ) curve. If your headphones don’t have a companion app, no problem! Nearly every media player, streaming platform, and smart device has a control panel for adjusting your sound, from output levels to frequencies. Now, who’s ready to bask in some bass?
