Wire Grind Releases Honest Overdrive, a Free VST Distortion Effect
lundi 6 janvier 2025, 20:31 , par Gearslutz
Wire Grind has released a free VST distortion effect called Honest Overdrive. The effect features a precisely adjustable distortion curve, status indicators, and oversampling. Sounds range from subtle saturation to heavy fuzz. Honest Overdrive differs from most other distortion effects in that the distortion curve is adjusted using precise meaningful quantities. Specifically, the clipping threshold and the softness amount are set in decibels. The meaning of these parameter's values is analogous to of the "threshold" and the "knee size" parameters commonly found in compressors. With this design approach, distortion is increased by decreasing the clipping threshold, and the user can adjust the point of maximum saturation. In contrast, traditional overdrive effects increase distortion by boosting the incoming signal, and clipping softness is unquantified. Honest Overdrive includes two status indicators, "overdriven" and "maximum saturation." When the "overdriven" light turns blue, it means that distortion is present in the output. When the "maximum saturation" light turns blue, it means that the input signal is pushing the effect to the point of maximum saturation. The effect also oversamples, up to 32x. Rather than setting the oversampling factor directly, Honest Overdrive sets the internal sample rate, which is always a multiple of either 44.1kHz or 48.0kHz. This ensures consistent results when different project sample rates are used.
