Brainworx Releases HUM Audio Devices LAAL Limiter Plugin

Plugin Alliance and Brainworx have announced the release of the Hum Audio Devices LAAL Limiter plugin, an emulation of the hardware unit by HUM Audio Devices. The LAAL (Look Ahead Analog Limiter) is based on a discrete circuit featuring an analog look-ahead delay line. According to HUM Audio Devices, this design allows the limiter to deliver loudness while preserving microdynamics, avoiding the typical 'brickwall deadness' associated with some limiters. The analog delay line of 0.2 ms allows the detection circuit to react to peaks intelligently before they occur, aiming for responsive peak limiting without harshness or distortion. The design focuses on achieving RMS levels and loudness targets while retaining detail, air, and low-end punch. The hardware was designed to remain in the analog domain, utilizing sophisticated detection and gain stage circuits without relying on soft clipping to artificially increase RMS levels. Brainworx states they have captured the analog chain of the hardware in the plugin, including the discreet signal pathway, studio-grade transformers, and precise detection circuitry. They highlight that the plugin version can compensate for the processing time required by the analog delay circuit, resulting in more immediate look-ahead processing compared to the hardware.
