Jamming with Latency — A Time-Shifted Online Performance

![]() Jamming with Latency A Time-Shifted Trio Performs Across The Internet Summary: In a bold and playful musical experiment, three extraordinary performers—tabla maestro Sirishkumar Manji, violinist-composer Lisa Bause, and genre-bending Catalan artist Carles Mestre —came together for a live-streamed concert on Source-Nexus Gateway, each performing from remote locations scattered across Europe. While the challenge of latency is a well-known hurdle in remote music collaboration, this performance wasn’t about defeating delay with tech tricks or click tracks. Instead, it was about leaning into the lag—embracing it as part of the conversation. Performing through a fixed-buffer connection that allowed each musician to “feel” the latency, the trio created music that danced with delay rather than fought it. Their deep listening, anticipation, and mutual trust enabled a kind of time-bending improvisation. Not flawless. Not instant. But alive. The event wasn’t meant to suggest that any style or ensemble could operate this way. Rather, it offered a window into what’s possible when exceptional players—rooted in groove, intuition, and decades of performance—treat latency not as a bug, but a feature. At its heart, this was less about proving a point and more about play—an invitation to reimagine connection across space and time.
