Sample Surfer: 1980s rackmount style tape delay [Windows VST3]
Sample Surfer by Fornicelli

VST3® delay effect for Windows

Sample Surfer works by resampling the delay buffer, stretching audio to play slower or faster (like changing the speed of a tape machine). The delay time can be modulated with built-in LFOs or audio input to produce chorus, flanging, and other time-bending effects. It was inspired by 1980s rackmount delay units and analog/tape delays.

1980s Rackmount Delays

You may be familiar with how it works if you have ever used rackmount delays from the 1980s, such as the SDD-3000, RDS-4000/8000 "Time Machine", or PCM 41/42. It was initially intended to be an re-creation of the RDS-4000 "Time Machine" with some elements of the PCM 42, but after months of experimenting with the design, it became its own thing.

Tape Loops / Analog Delays

One unique aspect is a soft-clipping & compression effect that is applied to the delay buffer as the level approaches 0 dB. This effect was intended to approximate the sound of tape loops and analog delays. With the feedback control at 100%, the sound may be similar to continuously recording to a tape loop with the erase head disabled.
