AIR Music Tech Unveils IONA
AIR Music Tech Unveils IONA — Authentic SH-101 Character Meets Modern Production Power. The meticulously modeled virtual instrument delivers legendary 101 tone with expanded 128-step sequencer, MPC integration, and DAW compatibility

AIR Music Tech, a leading developer of virtual instruments and audio effects, today announced IONA, a faithful recreation of the legendary SH-101 synthesizer that brings iconic analog basses, leads, and sequences into contemporary production workflows. Built on extremely precise modeling of the original hardware, Iona preserves the unmistakable 101 character while expanding creative possibilities through a modern 128-step pattern sequencer, intuitive graphical editor, and seamless integration across standalone MPC, MPC Desktop, and DAW environments.

“Iona captures the classic 101 tone we all know and love, then opens it up with a deeper sequencer and workflow refinements that fit today’s production styles,” said Neal Gustafson, Software Marketing Manager at AIR Music Technology. “Whether you’re sketching on MPC or finishing a track in your DAW, it’s the same instrument—and the same sound—everywhere.”

Authentic 101 Sound Engine

Iona's synthesis architecture faithfully recreates the SH-101's legendary tone through detailed modeled oscillator sections including Pulse, Sawtooth, Sub, and Noise sources with original VCO pitch range and modulation controls. The instrument features pulse-width modulation via LFO, envelope, or manual control; a BPM-syncable LFO with nine waveform shapes; and the classic resonant filter with envelope, LFO, and keyboard tracking. An ADSR envelope, portamento, and customizable pitch bender complete the authentic playing experience.

Modern Production Features

The 128-step pattern sequencer maintains the intuitive feel of the original while adding transpose/shift functions and a graphical editor for detailed programming. An integrated arpeggiator expands performance possibilities, while onboard effects including Lo-Fi, Delay, Reverb, and 3-Band EQ—provide immediate sound shaping. Over 100 factory presets offer instant inspiration, and five color skins (grey, red, blue, white, and yellow) can be saved per-preset for visual personalization.

Made for Contemporary Creators

Iona is designed for the diverse needs of today's music makers from beatmakers pursuing powerful basslines and efficient sequence workflows, to producers seeking 101 authenticity without vintage hardware maintenance. Electronic musicians who depend on classic analog tones in modern mixes and synth enthusiasts who value period-accurate emulation with contemporary flexibility will find Iona delivers professional results across both hardware and software platforms.
