Orchestral Tools has announced the release of Low End Orchestra, a specialized sample library focused exclusively on the bass register. Recorded at AIR Studios Lyndhurst in London, the collection combines large orchestral ensembles with sub-bass synthesis and sound design to provide a toolkit for contemporary cinematic scoring. The library features unconventional ensemble configurations, such as a 22-cello section and combinations of rare low-register woodwinds, including contra-alto flutes and contrabass clarinets. Eschewing higher-pitched instruments like violins or trumpets, the collection is designed to provide weight and texture for the 'low end' of a composition. Spatial Movement and Symmetry A central feature of the library is its focus on spatial audio and movement. Orchestral Tools arranged the players symmetrically in Lyndhurst Hall to facilitate directional performances. Many articulations include programmable movement, allowing users to control the direction of sound across the X and Y axes. This functionality is intended for use in stereo, surround, and immersive formats like Dolby Atmos. To capture these spatial characteristics, the developers utilized 21 microphone positions (up to 16 per instrument). These include traditional setups, ambisonic microphones, and specialized techniques like using a re-purposed NS10 speaker to capture LFE-specific sub-bass frequencies.
