AudioScape announces V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition

AudioScape announces the V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition the company's enhanced take on the legendary all-tube 1950's Gates Vari-Mu compressor.

Introducing AudioScape’s V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition, our enhanced take on the legendary variable-mu, all-tube compressor first made by Gates in the 1950s. Originally designed for broadcast, it gained a reputation among engineers and producers as one of the most musical and effortless compressors ever created.

The V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition improves on the original design by utilizing a premium JJ6386 tube for gain reduction and adding expanded recovery time options, making this sought-after classic more versatile for the modern studio.

One essential improvement was making the Input and Output controls more dynamic. The input level can now be kicked up substantially by engaging the Drive switch. This adds +5dB of gain before the Input level control, allowing the user to get the full effect of saturating the input and output transformers (one of the sonic signatures of this design), as well as pushing the tube gain stages, all while still allowing for ample headroom heading into your converter, console or tape machine.

Also new to the V-Comp+’s “Deluxe” upgrade is a Blend control allowing the user to mix the original (dry) signal with the processed (wet) signal, offering more tonal control and flexibility. Lastly, we’ve added a selectable Sidechain High Pass Filter with 60Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, and 240Hz corner frequencies available.

In keeping with the original circuit topology, Allen-Bradley carbon comp resistors and Cornell Dubilier polypropylene caps are used in key areas of the circuit, and a curated selection of tubes and American-made iron-core transformers are employed to best re-create the classic variable-mu box tone of the original.

The V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition’s variable-mu compression is not rigid and confronting, the compression ratio is program-dependent while still allowing the operator a certain level of control over the attack and release time constants. The resulting compression behavior is always extraordinarily smooth and allows the V-Comp+ Deluxe Edition to ebb and flow with the source audio in the most musical way. There’s nothing quite like it.
